The Infinitas Writers Group: information

Post by noemz »

The Infinitas Writers group is a science fiction / fantasy group for writers looking for feedback on their work.

It has been running since the 90s, and used to be held in the Infinitas Bookshop Parramatta (which alas, has shut down and is now online only at www.infinitas.com.au). We are now meeting at the Shakespeare Hotel at 200 Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, which is about 5-10 minutes walk from Central station.

Group members aim to improve their writing through merciless but constructive criticism.

One of the strengths of this group is its online presence; instead of being limited to a couple of thousand words due to the short nature of face to face meetings, members can post longer works here so that other members can read and critique the work in advance of meetings. Then when we get together, we can spend our time discussing the stories and comments.

New members are expected to show a reasonable standard of writing ability. Once you have clearance to post, you should start with a short story of no more than 5,000 words so that we can gauge where you're at in terms of writing skill. We have seen a lot of writers who want to embark directly on a series of epic novels in their own expanded universe, and don't want to write short stories. Sorry, but you have to learn to walk before you can run, and you will learn much faster with shorter works. Short stories force writers to learn discipline, and we can also give better feedback when we can see the whole story arc at once.
