SHORT STORY APRIL 2019

Post by noemz »

Okay peeps, here's the deal!

For our April 2019, you will post a short story. Not novel chapters, not outlines or blurbs, not synopses. A short story.

This short story MUST BE NO LONGER THAN 5,000 words. This is a strict limit to force every word to count.

The inspiration for your story is: "More trolleys appeared behind the rows of soldiers." This could be your title, or a line in your story, or just the inspiration for your story, but it must at least be the inspiration for it. No pre-existing characters or worlds; make something new.

The short story must have a beginning, middle and an end. Not just a scene, not a 'slice of life'. There must be a purpose, a goal, a motivation. There should be clear POV characters (not too many!) Make it interesting, and keep it tight. And obviously, it needs to be science fiction or fantasy.

If you're not used to writing short stories, then come to the February and March meetings and bring along a one line description of what your short story will be about. We can workshop it to ensure it's not too complex for the 5,000 word length.

Short stories are a really good way to sharpen your writing, so don't you dare pike on this. I mean, I encourage you to write and submit a short story for April! Hooray! Puppies and kittens and rainbows! (But seriously though, don't chicken out.)
